The tool is ground down from a single carbide rod which means it has a very strong core and can run at higher speeds than braised tip radius profile bits. It can also be resharpened many times.

They are not very different to finishing cutters except for the grooves in the cutting edge. These grooves cut off the chip being formed by the cutting edge, relieving pressure on the tool and allowing the hot chip to fly off into the dust extraction.

Shortening the chips cools the tool and is particularly useful when machining hard glues and laminates that wear away at an overheating cutter. The notches are offset so you aren’t left with lines on the board. The following edge removes any remaining material and the finish left behind is close to perfect. However, there is a slight coarseness left behind by the corners of the notches that dig into the material.

Following with a finish cutter or using a pre-milling station before edging is reccomended.

Compression cutters combine both and up cut and down cut spirals to force chips into the centre of the panel. The inwards pressure prevents chipping on either surface.

Two flute router bits have a smooth cutting action and a greater finish in harder materials.

Up-cut spirals can run at higher speeds but requires good quality suction on table to prevent material tug.

Down cut refers to the direction of the flute. As the router bit grooves, slots and cuts the chips are forced downwards. Therefore, the best finish is on the topside of the cut part. The downwards chip flow also assists in holding the material in place. However, feed speeds should be reduced due to the increase of pressure on the tool.
